Esfir leads Cal into to her room and shuts the door behind them. Her room has changed from the last time he was here - she's been building bookcases, and even though one is incomplete with tools and pieces of wood on the floor, the room looks more homey.

On the wall is pin-up board, complete with both black-and-white and colour photographs of her old life, but the model aircraft are gone from her desk.

"Um, mind the mess."

"Oh, I believe it."

"I don't think there's any political system that isn't seriously fucked up," Cal says. "I mean, that's what you get when you put politicians in charge."

Cal is certainly not above cracking the occasional politician joke.

"Sadly."

And she does sound like she means that.

Then she stops.

"What did you mean before, I sucked at seducing?"

"You haven't been able to get me in bed yet," Cal says brightly, with a smart-ass grin.

Esfir glances up at him, arching an eyebrow.




"I haven't been trying," she points out.

[isaysimplewords]

"Yes, that's why it was a joke," Cal points out helpfully.

With anyone else, he'd take the joke a little further, but with Esfir, he'd rather not push. Or seem like he is.

"...English is very odd."

[isaysimplewords]

Cal can't really argue with that.

"Why?"

That's not an argument. It's a question.

"...I could write a book on how odd it is. It is not...regular, and has extra words you don't need, and...well, some of it is things you can't explain. Like, jokes - you have to know English and think English since child to get it."

"Oh." Cal thinks about this. "I was kinda going for a little more obvious than that. Sorry."

"Well, I could have mentioned the spelling, but I thought that was a given."

Confusion for a moment, then,

"Oh! Uh, with the joke, I meant."

[aimedforthemoon]

"Oh."

[isaysimplewords]

"Uh. Sorry," Cal says, looking mildly embarrassed. It would be nice if having his DNA revamped had also meant that he'd stop having a completely different conversation from the one the other person was having.

[aimedforthemoon]

"Don't worry about it."

[isaysimplewords]

Cal smiles a bit.

"Thanks."

[aimedforthemoon]

"No problemo," she answers easily, and means it.
