It's late afternoon - still warm, but late enough that the moon is out - and Esfir is lying on the grass, shoes next to her and pants rolled up. She's gazing up at the blue sky, one hand under her head.

The other is out in front of her and, one eyes closed, she is making the moon vanish and appear just by moving her thumb.

(possibly, she really shouldn't be doing this)

Owen just makes a 'hm' noise.

"So. Should we agree now we don't worry about each other?"

He just laughs.

Her smile flickers from a grin to a smile to merely an amused look, but there is no darkness to her changing expression.

"I should probably go. Work calls, and all that."

"Have fun."

"Well, I don't know about that."

Now, her smile turns crooked, dark.




"You have a job. That is interesting, where you can still claim your title of what you studied."


Her smile widens.

"I'd count your blessings."

"They need me", he says simply. "Someone's gotta patch them up and do the autopsies."

"Like I said."

"Yeah, I s'pose it is a blessing. Compared to the alternative."

"Mm-hmm."

He glances at her sideways, curiously.

She gestures.

"Neechyeevo. Oh, Bozhe, I need to start to smoking again."

"Very bad for you, smoking", he says easily. "Not that I wasn't thinking the same thing."

"I'm dead."

"That is a very good point."

[aimedforthemoon]

"And I'm not going to go into space again, which is why I quit, so..."

"Never too late. Maybe you'll find someone spacegoing here."

"But in the meantime..."

"In the meantime", he says, rolling over and looking at her again, "we'll have to see what we can do in the way of distraction."

A faint smile.

"Indeed. You should get to work, though."

"Yeah." That's vaguely regretful, but he leans down to start fishing for his clothes. "Tomorrow, then?"

A flicker of surprise.

"Tomorrow."

"No commitment", he says, twisting back to look at her. "Just an arrangement, yeah?"
